HOW TO HELP YOUR CHILD
If your child discloses to you:
- Try to remain calm
- Find a private place to talk
- Believe what the child tells you
- Reassure the child that it was okay to tell someone
- Reiterate that it is not their fault
- Do not make promises that you cannot keep
- Do NOT contact the perpetrator
- Report the disclosure to the Missouri Department of Social Services
- Leave the investigating to appropriate authorities to avoid interference
What can I say to help my child?
- “This abuse was not your fault.”
- “You can come to me if you want to talk.”
- “I am here to listen and support you.”
- “I am sorry that you had to experience that.”
- “We can make a plan to help you if this happens again.”
- “You are important and I care about you.”
- “I can find adults that can help keep you safe.”
- “What can I do to help you through this time?”
