Believe the individual after they have shared their experiences with you. Understand that it might have been extremely difficult for them to be truthful about the abuse if their partner attends church with them.

Have open, honest conversations about their safety. Offer to help safety plan with them and explore options that with keep them and their children safe.

Offer on-going support to them whether they have decided to leave or stay with their partner.

Encourage them to reach out for additional support from a domestic violence advocate.

Attempt to help the individual and their partner come together. This could be extremely dangerous for them, their children, and yourself.

Be judgmental or critical of the individual. There is no reason or excuse of any individual to be violence or abusive.
